Ouro Preto, a colonial town
Nested in the vegetation, Ouro Preto, estimated as one of the most beautiful colonial cities of South America, was classified as a World Heritage by Unesco in 1981.
Founded in 1711, the city is a museum on its own: tiny sloped streets boarded by beautiful houses with wooden or iron balconies, old sculpted fountains, numerous Baroque churches. The paintings of the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret bear witness that the city has kept the same authenticity today as from its golden age.
Apart from its historical treasure, the city is also well known as a major mineralogical hub since the gold rush from the 18th century in the region of Minas Gerais.
